The Skills Workshop is aimed at young people who have left school without having gained a  school certificate, or are not motivated to continue studying.  There are few educational opportunities available to these people.
Training courses offered by the Skills Workshops provide those who complete them successfully with a professional qualification in a particular trade such as gardening, electricity, painting, and in this way give many underprivileged young people a valuable second chance.
The initiative is controlled by the local council in Canet, and subsidised by the “Servei d´Ocupació de Catalunya” as part of the “Program IMPULS”, and by European Social Funds.
Canet has been a pioneer in the area of “Skills workshops” (Escoles taller), the first being held in 1988.

What do “Skills Workshops” offer?

Our current one year courses, which started on 14 October 2010, offers thirty places for young people not only from Canet de Mar, but also from other nearby towns. There are three modules: gardening and forestry work/ painting and decorating/  installing solar energy panels, and the aim is to improve public space.

Who are “Skills Workshops” for?

The students are young people aged between sixteen and twenty-five who are unemployed and want to learn a trade. There are three teachers, one for each module (trade), a technical director who co-ordinates the team, and an administrative assistant.

What are the Skills Workshop terms and conditions?

For the first six months students get a grant. For second half of their course they are given a training contract and receive 75% of the national minimum wage, and in this way effectively become workers as well as students.
